Dona Kary, 77, died after a long courageous battle with cancer on Sunday August 9, 2020, surrounded by her family at her home in Grand Forks.
Dona Kary was born November 22, 1942 to Norman and Geraldine (Wilson) Holien in Grand Forks. She went to elementary and junior high school a St. Michaels, and finished her education at Grand Forks Central where she graduated. Dona had been married once while she was younger, and received two of her greatest gifts, a Daughter Debora Weisert, and a Daughter Diane (Weisert) Ruesing. She married Vernon Kary on June 9 1979, and together they had a son David Kary.
Dona held many jobs through her life, working for Griffith’s Department Store, and served at a couple local watering holes. She went to beauty school in Grand Forks, and worked as a hair dresser for 28 years, at Anne’s on Demers, JoJo’s Hair Boutique, Command Performance, The Hair Tenders, and finally Thrift Cut. After a rotator cuff surgery, she had to put down her sheers, and went to work for UND in their Traffic Department in their Visitors Parking Booth. She did that until it was closed, and then finisher working at M&H Gas station as their morning baker. When she had her shoulder replaced, she was not able to go back to work. In her free time, she was a bibliophile, particularly of Murder Mystery and Supernatural books. She was a very good cook and baker, she won numerous awards at the Grand Forks County Fair, and also the Minot State Fair. A trait she instilled in her son. She also like gardening, and sewing and creating new things.
She is survived by her husband Vernon Kary, her daughter Diane (Bradly) Ruesing of Texas, her son David of Grand Forks, and her Uncle Everett (Ann) Wilson of Oklahoma City. Also, her Grand Daughter Abby (Cody) Calhoun and Great Grandson Dawson. She is preceded in death by her Mother and Father. Grandparents, Daughter Debbie, Sister Cheryl, Brother-in-Law Arlo, granddaughter Alyssa Ruesing, and many in-laws.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2020 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service on Friday, August 14, 2020 also in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Because of Covid-19 Masks must be worn at Funeral and Prayer Service. And can be removed for Communion. Social Distancing is expected. Lunch will be provided, and burial will be at a later date.
