HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!

This is the time of year when Grand Forks can be one of the prettiest cities in the world! We were among the lucky people to always have a white Christmas. Sometimes we also had a white Halloween and Thanksgiving. I'm sure all of us remember carefully planning our Trick or Treat costume, only to have our mothers cover it all up with a winter coat because it snowed on Halloween.
Christmas always meant lots of decorated homes and businesses. I remember on many occasions when our family drove around town to see all the lights. My father would always comment that the Northern States Power Company loved the Christmas season because of all the electricity that was being used.
We always looked forward to great anticipation to the two-week vacation we were given over the holidays. Many hours were spent at the skating rinks and riding sleds and toboggans down the hills of Lincoln and Central parks. There was always a Christmas dance at Central High School and if I recall correctly, alumni were also invited to this affair.
New Year's Eve usually involved small gatherings of friends at someone's house whose parents didn't mind staying up half the night. New Year's Day was mostly football.
About two weeks after school started in January, the semester ended with several days of final exams. We then settled in for the long haul of school without breaks until Easter, as we were not given a spring break in those days.
All in all, the middle of the school year had its high points and low points, but we seemed to survive year after year. Those long weeks in February and March were broken up by the prom, hob nobs, basketball games, and the hope of spring.
I hope everyone had a restful summer, colorful fall, and that you maintain good health and a positive attitude. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Stay in touch and stay well.
